Apple and Goldman Sachs to team up for joint credit card

Apple’s next big product might be a credit card Apple, Goldman Sachs teaming up on credit card for the iPhone: Report

Apple and Goldman Sachs will issue a credit card this spring with money-managing features tucked into the iPhone, according to a report.

It would also be the first credit card created by Goldman, a financial powerhouse that's looking to expand its offerings for everyday customers. This also comes after Apple is expected to reveal a news subscription service in March. The credit card will ostensibly be used like any other plastic, but come with iPhone-based features baked into the Wallet app in Apple's iOS to attract customers, the Journal's sources said. It launched digital bank Marcus in 2016.

It would be "odd" for Apple to offer a jointly developed credit card with Goldman and not with Synchrony Financial, MoffettNathanson analyst Lisa Ellis said, since Synchrony dominates the market for co-brand offerings.

It will offer around 2 percent in cash back on most purchases.

At present, the best credit card for Apple fans is the Barclaycard Visa Apple Rewards Card.

The Apple Pay card will use Mastercard's payment network, which is the second-largest in the USA after Visa, the sources added. Being that so many consumers already own Apple's smartphones and tablets, the tech behemoth argued that number of paid subscriptions to its services is much more accurate portrayal of the company's success. Macy's was my first credit card, then Citi Mastercard, but once I had an Amex, I was proud to use it because not everyone qualified. The question with Goldman is will Apple help socialize the investment-bank model for the general consumer? That includes revenue from the App Store, Apple Music and Apple Pay - although as the Journal notes, Apple Pay "has been slow to catch on among users and merchants". However, its decision to partner with Goldmach Sachs on a consumer-facing product is an interesting one.

Apple and Goldman declined to comment.
