Most of Europe's security agencies heavily rely on United States intelligence to fight terrorism, and the move of Trump's administration to deny access to the information to Germany is a massive blow against the country's anti-terrorism efforts. Instead, it has introduced an inspection scheme that analyses the equipment, while Huawei has offered to let the federal IT ministry analyze its source code.

The Wall Street Journal reported Monday on the contents of Ambassador Grenell's letter to the German government.

Germany had announced on March 7 that it wouldn't stop any company from bidding on 5G communications contracts.

But Huawei's 5G equipment is reputed to much further advanced than those of rivals Ericsson and Nokia, which has made it attractive for mobile operators looking to quickly roll out new networks.

The US has been lobbying its allies to boycott Huawei due to national security risks. Pence accused Huawei to be connected with Chinese intelligence and thus, being capable of becoming a potential threat to the national security.

The United States might punish Germany if the country decides to use Huawei technology (via The Wall Street Journal). "The 5G networks our allies buy won't be the networks that they eventually operate, as the software could be changed on a moment-to-moment basis by the manufacturer". "There will be a quick reply".

Along with worries about network security, USA prosecutors have charged Huawei and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, over alleged Iran sanctions violations, and Beijing and Washington are trying to settle a tariff war affecting a wide range of goods.

Security concerns have led Australia to completely ban the company's technology and New Zealand has moved to partially restrict it.

Zhengei, Meng's father, recently described the battles over the firm as "politically motivated" and part of an attempt to "crush us" because its 5G technology enjoys a wide lead over Western competitors. But suspicions have increased enough that the company's founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei, tried to quash them earlier this year, when he said, "No law requires any company in China to install mandatory backdoors".

Essentially, the lawsuit is daring USA intelligence services to put up or shut up.
