Thursday morning's announcement will leave former Vice President Joe Biden as the last big name yet to make a decision about the 2020 campaign.

While he narrowly lost his U.S. Senate race to incumbent Republican Ted Cruz past year, O'Rourke managed to build a nationwide following with his unconventional, optimistic style combined with a populist message that brought in nearly $80 million in primarily small donations. The challenges we face are the greatest in living memory.

"I'm really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents", he said.

O'Rourke joins a field of more than 16 Democrats, two of whom also attended Columbia: John Delaney, CC '85, and Andrew Yang, Law '99. "We saw the power of this in Texas".

O'Rourke was little-known outside his hometown of El Paso until he challenged Republican Sen.

Speculation on whether he would run for president has been discussed since his Senate loss to Ted Cruz in November. He got within 3 percentage points of upsetting Cruz in the nation's largest red state - and shattered fundraising records in the process - immediately fueling chatter that he could have higher ambitions. But he harnessed growing nationwide popularity to rake in $80-plus million in donations, including a staggering $38 million from July to September 2018 alone. "I said, 'Is he insane or is that just the way he acts?'" "They are browner and blacker than most of America".

A onetime guitarist for an El Paso punk band called Foss, O'Rourke boosted his already considerable nonpolitical street cred in the Senate race with a viral video showing him skateboarding across a Whataburger restaurant parking lot.

"The destination can not be Election Night, November 2020". He said he will be traveling the country over the coming days for a listening tour. "It's remarkable, his rise, and that he's now running for president".

"You can probably tell that I want to run", he told Vanity Fair.

Meanwhile, Gingrich compared O'Rourke, the former representative from Texas who almost defeated Sen.

"Beto O'Rourke is one of the great examples of the left talking itself into hysteria", Gingrich said. He acknowledged at a town hall shortly after the election that he was weighing a presidential bid. Despite the alumni status of former president Barack Obama, CC '83, the college remains behind numerous other Ivy League undergraduate schools-including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton-in the number of graduates sent to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Afterward, Obama praised the Texan for his Senate run, calling him an "impressive young man who ran a terrific race".

"I'm just born to do this", he told the magazine. And that, you'd like to think, is normally how things work. He didn't hire traditional political consultants and pollsters, didn't take any PAC money and refused to go negative against Cruz. "We are going to show the country who we are".
