The reputed head of the notorious Gambino crime family was shot dead in front of his home in an upscale neighborhood on Staten Island late Wednesday.

Cali, 53, was shot several times in the Todt Hill district of Staten Island on Wednesday evening and died later in hospital.

Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said police are reviewing surveillance footage that captured the events surrounding Frank Cali's death yesterday in Staten Island.

Authorities are investigating Cali's death, and some media reports note a blue pickup was seen leaving the scene shortly after the shooting.

Cali is the first mob boss to be taken out since John Gotti Sr. orchestrated the assassination of then-Gambino boss Paul Castellano in 1985, according to The New York Post.

"The Gambino crime family during Castellano's reign was the largest criminal organization in the USA, with law enforcement estimating it had some 250 "'made" members" and "more than 550 lower-ranking "associate' members".

The head of one of the infamous five mob families of NY has been murdered.

Cali's only mob-related criminal conviction came a decade ago, when he pleaded guilty in an extortion scheme involving a failed attempt to build a NASCAR track on Staten Island.

The late NY native had served time in recent years, too. He was succeeded in 2011 by Domenico Cefalu, only to be replaced four years later by Cali.

Along with the Gambino organisation, the other NY families are known as Bonanno, Colombo, Genovese and Lucchese.
