The changes come shortly after Mr Zuckerberg outlined his plan to transform Facebook into a "privacy-focused platform." The shakeup is the second major management restructuring in as many years as the company also faces numerous government investigations across the world related to user privacy and fake news on its services.

This week the social media giant and its platforms WhatsApp and Instagram also experienced the worst outage in the company's history.

In his post, Zuckerberg announced further reorganization of the company's top ranks and the departure of Chris Daniels, another executive who ran Internet.org, the company's philanthropic project to promote global internet access, and was recently promoted to lead WhatsApp. Cox started off at Facebook as an engineer working on News Feed, but he later moved on to other parts of the company and became one of the biggest leaders at the company after Mark Zuckerberg. "But after 2016, we both realized we had too much important work to do to improve our products for society, and he stayed to help us work through these issues and help us chart a course for our family of apps going forward", wrote Zuckerberg. Instead, the leaders of each app will report to Zuckerberg.

Facebook has lost several top executives during the last two years, including its general counsel, chief security officer, and co-founders of WhatsApp, Instagram and Oculus, a virtual reality firm it bought in 2014.

We all saw that he's very smart, hard-nosed and talented. "We'll miss him, but many of us will always consider him a Raven". Harbaugh served as Mosley's head coach during the linebacker's five seasons with Baltimore.

Cathcart and Simo worked closely to bring video uploading tools and professional video content to Facebook. Daniels led WhatsApp for 10 months, after replacing co-founder Jan Koum, who left the company in April after clashing with Zuckerberg over a plan to loosen privacy and encryption.

Fidji Simo will be the new head of the Facebook app.

A WhatsApp spokesman declined to comment on Daniels' departure or make him available for comment.

In his blog post, Zuckerberg said that Cox had told him that he planned to move on several years ago, but that Cox chose to hold off on leaving until the company made more progress combating misinformation and Russian meddling - controversies that erupted in the wake of the 2016 election.

Zuckerberg still has a number of long-time product and engineering lieutenants.
