New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday said she would announce new gun laws within days, after an immigrant-hating terrorist killed 50 people in attacks at two mosques in the city of Christchurch. Lawyer Richard Peters had initially been appointed by the court to represent Tarrant on Saturday.

"He didn't appear to me to be facing any challenges or mental impairment, other than holding fairly extreme views", Peters said, adding Tarrant showed no condolences or regret although the "discussion didn't touch on that" topic.

The dead from Friday's attack span generations, aged between three and 77, according to a list circulated among relatives.

Ardern has announced that New Zealand will hold a national commemoration service to mark the attack.

The shock of the attacks has led to calls for an immediate tightening of laws to restrict access to some firearms, particularly semi-automatic weapons such as the AR-15 rifle used by the shooter in Christchurch.

David Tipple said in a statement that he has provided police with the purchase records and full details of the sales, which did not include military style semi-automatic weapons.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said the cabinet has backed gun laws changes "in principle" following the massacre.

Andrew Little, the minister who oversees New Zealand's intelligence agencies, said monitoring of online activity had been stepped up in the wake of the Christchurch attacks.

"We have made a decision as a cabinet, we are unified", said Ardern.

Police said the homes were where the accused gunman had grown up, although he has spent most of the past decade outside the country.

Mr Tipple said: "We detected nothing extraordinary about this license holder". "We have to leave no stone unturned to not only deal with the perpetrator and ensure the criminal justice system gets to deal with him, but to understand how this could have happened in this country". The gang gathered outside Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch to perform the powerful tribute to mourners.

"It's a small thing to do but I think it's symbolic of people wanting to show their support for the families who have been affected by the massacre", she said.

"I want to definitely state that we believe that there was only one attacker responsible for this horrendous event", Police Commissioner Mike Bush told a media conference. "You know I have lots of support, lots of love, lots of kindness from all of the New Zealand people". The organization said on its website that it is working with victims referred to them and making contact with appropriate groups in the Islamic community to begin using the funds. He said there would be no burials on Monday.

Mo, a volunteer who had flown in from Brisbane to wash the bodies, said the people who died in the mosques were classified as martyrs.
