"Our primary focus here is in assisting the FBI in their investigation, and provide information from our missing person case involving Timmothy Pitzen, should this prove to be him", Aurora police said.

Pitzen was 6 years old when he disappeared on May 11, 2011.

Louisville FBI officials tweeted Wednesday that they are now working with national and local authorities in Cincinnati, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and police in Aurora, Illinois and Newport, Kentucky.

In 2011, six-year-old Timmothy Pitzen's mother picked him up at school in IL, took him to a zoo and a water park, and then killed herself, leaving a note in which she said her son was fine but no one would ever find him. She said they are overjoyed he may have been found, but also scared.

A note was found at the scene that said her son was safe, before adding, "You'll never find him".

"I said 'I love you buddy, ' and he said 'I love you too, Dad, and I'll see you later, ' and I'm like 'OK, ' and I watched him run off to class", Pitzen told the channel about the last morning he dropped his son off at school.

According to a police report, a 14-year-old who identified himself as Pitzen said he fled to Newport, Kentucky, Wednesday after escaping "two kidnappers that have been holding him for seven years". "As this is now no longer an "Aurora" case, we will defer inquiries to the appropriate jurisdictions in OH".

The teen told police he escaped his captors and proceeded to run across a bridge into Kentucky.

Police in Aurora, Illinois, sent two detectives 330 miles to the Cincinnati area, where the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police are investigating. "I just want him to come home to his family", Pitzen said.

The men drove a Ford SUV with Wisconsin plates, police said. "We have no idea if this is Timmothy Pitzen", Aurora Police Sgt. Bill Rowley told the Chicago Tribune.

"It's devastating. It's like reliving that day all over again, and Timmothy's father is devastated once again", said his aunt Kara Jacobs.

"I say it's a double-edged sword because yes they're excited. but there's always some form of self-reflection where they say, 'Where's my child?' So it's a hard road for all searching parents out there", he said.

"It's been very bad. We've been on tenterhooks", she said of the family's disappointment Thursday. "We don't want to get our hopes up and our family's hopes up until we know something".

Newport Police Chief Tom Collins said officers responded and the boy is receiving medical care. She reportedly took him to a zoo, then a Wisconsin water park before she was found dead with her wrists slit in a Rockford, Illinois, hotel.

Police have said Timmothy's mother might have dropped the boy off with a friend, noting that the boy's auto seat and Spider-Man backpack were gone.

The case drew widespread attention, and searchers spread across Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa but were unable to locate Timmothy. "We are thinking about him, and we love him", she told Chicago's ABC affiliate.
