Three US service members were killed and three others were wounded by an improvised explosive device near Bagram Airbase on Monday, April 8, the Resolute Support confirmed in a statement.

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said he supported USA efforts to pursue a cease-fire with the Taliban, who effectively control half of Afghanistan and have refused to negotiate with his government.

Earlier, the Taliban claimed to have conducted an attack with a vehicle bomb, saying "multiple invaders" had been killed.

The wounded were evacuated and are receiving medical care, the statement said. "The contractor, an Afghan citizen, was initially treated along with other injured civilians, later identified as a contractor and treated at Bagram Airfield".

Three other United States service members were wounded. The names of those killed were being withheld for 24 hours until the notification of next of kin has been completed, as per Defense Department policy.

Earlier three people were killed in twin explosions in the eastern city of Jalalabad. He leaves behind his wife, Shannon, and three daughters.

Taliban fighters attacked Afghan Army checkpoints near the Pakistani border overnight, killing 20 troops, an Afghan official has said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden vehicle near the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation base in Bagram district, in Parwan province. "They volunteered to protect their country", Gen. Scott Miller, who heads USA and foreign forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement.

The Taliban has until now refused to meet with the Kabul government, accusing it of being a puppet regime. 13 were killed previous year.

Meanwhile, the Taliban have agreed to take part in an all-Afghan gathering later this month in Qatar, where the insurgents maintain a political office.

Abdullah said the Taliban could partake in elections and even compete for the presidency if they renounce violence.

Seven American service members have been killed this year in Afghanistan.
