Leonard Rios | 11 April, 2019, 02:42

A USA judge on Monday, April 8, 2019, blocked the Trump administration's policy of returning asylum seekers to Mexico as they wait for an immigration court to hear their cases but the order won't immediately go into effect.

However, Trump said the practice, which ended in June 2018 under heavy political and legal pressure, had in fact been useful in stemming the flow of illegal immigrants across the US-Mexican border. The White House plans to remove more personnel in a purge of DHS leadership, an official familiar with the matter told the Associated Press.

President Trump recently took a shot at the federal courts for blocking his "wait in Mexico" policy for migrants seeking asylum at the southern border.

In response, Trump has moved to cut almost $500 million in aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, whose citizens have trekked toward the U.S.in growing numbers.

Trump's battle to prevent illegal immigration and soaring numbers of asylum seekers has turned into the biggest political fight in the country ahead of next year's presidential election.

As for Nielsen's job, Trump announced that Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan would serve as acting DHS secretary.

The president's statements to reporters in the Oval Office came after Trump forced out top officials at the Homeland Security Department, including Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, out of frustration that more wasn't being done to curb record-setting migration of families from Central America.

The host then threw back to another clip of Trump claiming that he was "the one who stopped" separation.

Migrant families from Mexico, fleeing from violence, listen to officers of the US Customs and Border Protection before entering the United States to apply for asylum at Paso del Norte global border crossing bridge in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico June 20, 2018.

Trump and other US officials have called on Congress to alter the asylum laws and address a system that is in crisis, while advocates for immigrants say many are fleeing violence and have legitimate claims. "We found cases where adults have been coming in with kids who are not their kids, yet they're claiming that they're their children". Nielsen "believed the situation was becoming untenable" with Trump "becoming increasingly unhinged about the border crisis and making unreasonable and even impossible requests", a senior administration official told CNN on Sunday. But he cautioned that last year's collapse of immigration talks with Trump did not bode well.

The President wanted families separated even if they were apprehended within the US.

It was not immediately clear whether the administration would ask an appeals court to put the ruling on hold.

This isn't the first time Trump has hinted at wanting to change troops' rules of engagement when operating inside their own country.

Trump also chastised reporters Wednesday for supposedly not covering the dangers faced by migrants who cross the border with the aid of smugglers, who he said often leave vulnerable immigrants to die on the risky route.

Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich agreed and lamented that the media covers Democrats and Republicans differently, and that discrepancy has only been heightened during the Trump presidency.

Smith said, "after President Trump issued the zero tolerance order, officials did separate children from their parents".
