The World Through My Eyes - Street Photography of Alessio Trerotoli

Alessio Trerotoli likes to call himself a ‘romantic traveller’ and ‘wandering photographer’. After graduating in 2009, he had his first solo exhibition ‘Travel Notes’ in 2010 at the Galleria Montoro Roma. He recently shot a fantastic photo project called “Urban Melodies” by superimposing multiple images of urban landscapes and metropolitan life in many world cities like Rome, New York, Paris, Berlin etc. to create an abstract representation of urban life. You can see those images here in his website while we feature some of his street photography images from the project “The World Through My Eyes”. More from Alessio Trerotoli about himself and photography:

Alessio Trerotoli photography (1)About me : I was born in 1981 in Rome, it’s the city where I grew up and where I’m living. I like to think to be a “romantic traveller” and an “errant (wandering?) photographer”. My graduation was in 2009 in Disciplines of Arts and Cinema, with a specialization in History and Theory of Cinema. In the same year I started to travel in Europe and in America, taking pictures and making experiences. My first exhibition was in 2010, in a gallery in Rome, where I’ve showed pictures of my travels. Since then my pictures have been exhibited in several Italian galleries. In 2012 I published my first book, “Fuori dalla caverna”, with notes, tales and some pictures of my travels and at the end of the same year I began my most important project, “Urban Melodies”. In 2013 I won Abstracta Festival and the year after I won another prize in Urban International Photo Contest. In 2015 I realized other projects like “Roma Coast to Coast”, a 21 km walking trip through my city, and I finished my first 365 Project on Instagram.

Alessio Trerotoli photography (2)My relationship with photography : I always had a passion for photography. There is a moment I can’t forget: when I was 10 years old I was showing to my grandmother photos of a little excursion I made with school in a place not far from Rome. My album was full of pictures of my schoolmates and my grandma told me: “But where are you?”. In that moment I realized that there wasn’t a picture of me in the entire album because I always was behind the camera. It was the first time I saw myself like a photographer. Later, After my graduation I began to travel by myself. In Europe, then in United States and in South America. In that moment I didn’t know to be a photographer, actually I didn’t know who I was. But my camera was with me, and walking through the streets and the alleys of Paris I suddenly found a huge inspiration, an inspiration that followed me in every city I visited since that moment. I didn’t choose to photograph, it just happened something in me that told me to do it.

Alessio Trerotoli photography (3)My genres and style of photography : I absolutely love street photography, the stories that every corner, every street and every building can tell. I need to search the soul of a place, I mean, what that a place can tell me. Through my photographs I try to catch the real soul of a street or a building, with something that belongs to its history and in the same time to its daily life. In my life I always try to look for something beautiful around me and I think that I try to put something beautiful in my pictures.

Alessio Trerotoli photography (4)My photo projects : “The world through my eyes” is my way to see places and people around me… my way of seeing life. To my city, Rome, I dedicated two projects: “Roma Coast to Coast”, a 21km walking trip through my city, and “Heroes”, about the anti-heroes that live the daily life in Rome. But my most important project is “Urban Melodies”, where I depict, through superimpositions, an abstract vision of urban scenes from modern metropolis like Rome, New York, Paris, Berlin and many others.

Alessio Trerotoli photography (5)My methods into shooting : I walk a lot, keeping my eyes always open, looking for a good scene to shoot. I try to feed my inspiration walking for a while every day and taking pictures of daily life in the city.

My photo equipment etc. : I’m not obsessed with lens or gears. When I go out for shooting I have with me just my Canon and my 50mm. I have other lens in my room, but I use it only when I really need it. I walk a lot (in travel or in my hometown) so I prefer to have a lightweight bag. Once I read something that sounds perfect to me: “In Street Photography the best gear is a good pair of shoes”.

Alessio Trerotoli photography (6)My inspirations and favorite stuff : I’ve always admired photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau, and I also love Margaret Bourke-White and Vivian Maier. Not only photographers… movies, songs and books are my daily food. I find inspiration in music, books, movies, and people around me. My personal heroes are Bruce Springsteen and Antoine Doinel (the protagonist of lot of François Truffaut’s movies). Movies like “Boyhood” or “The Tree of Life” or “Les 400 coups” fill my soul of love for the art, inspiration and motivation for my work. “Thunder Road” is my favourite song ever; it’s really special to me.
