Built Dreams : A Luca Prestia Project

A showcase post on photography of Luca Prestia was posted on this website more than a year back. Recently we came across his ongoing project ‘Built Dreams’. I like these image of beautiful houses and their pristine surroundings however the English translation (from Italian) of project statement is a bit vague.

Luca Prestia is a freelance photographer and photojournalist since 2000. He collaborated in the creation of short films (as Ma l’amor mio non muore, Roma 2007), and his photos have been published in Italian magazine and have been used as book covers. His works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions.

Project statement:

Despite the obvious discomforts, deciding to travel for camping is still a unique way to get in touch directly with an incredible variety of unknown people and learning their ways of living that we are usually unaware of. You sleep literally next to each other. They share the same structures and stories, and for this reason any barrier that protects our privacy in daily life will disappear.

But there is an even more interesting effect that travelling has on us and this is true regardless of the countries to be visited: the existence of more or less large areas occupied by small or large prefabricated buildings, somehow ‘contradict’ the spirit of a place that, in the popular imagination, is by definition the impermanence, the temporariness of their wanderings that deliberately choose the displacement and that is a substantial part of the journey. These structures are instead a fixed point, the evident willingness to play the same housing conditions that are typical of the daily permanence. In fact, whole families decide to pass more or less long periods of the year within the housing structure that are usually made of wood or plastic and usually surrounded by tiny gardens filled with objects of leisure. Plants, flower pots, barbecue, swings, satellite dishes, benches are the usual corollary with whom perhaps you try to build an environment as possible equal to what in many cases is left in the city (which often is a few kilometers) in an attempt to achieve, specifically, a microcosm whose housing dimension ends up being quite similar to the one used during most of the year.
